The building was developed and belongs to UTILE (Unité de travail pour l’implantation de logement étudiant), a non-profit organization with a mandate to study, develop, and promote affordable cooperative student housing in Quebec. UTILE’s mission has led it to develop housing projects to meet the needs of students across the province.
A major challenge for most renters is simply developing a healthy and proactive relationship with their building’s owner, especially those who specialize in student housing. This is why a non-profit partner organization, SHAPEM, will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day management of the Cooperative’s building―things like collecting rent and making repairs. SHAPEM already manages hundreds of affordable housing units and is recognized for both its flexibility and rigour.
